about those Manners...

Manners for the modern warrior started life as a program I wrote to teach my martial arts students about good manners, good citizenship and good sportsmanship.

I feel, as many people do, that there is a lack of emphasis from society in general (in particular, popular culture) on the value of speaking politely to each other, being spontaneously helpful to others - and almost no value is placed on genuine loyalty, honesty, kindness and good sportsmanship. Instead we seem hellbent on teaching our children that you can have whatever you want, whenever you want it - and "please", "thankyou" and "you're welcome" are not required. There is little direction given to us on how best to teach these skills, which are far more than just knowing what fork to use or how to behave at a swish black tie "do"... not all of us need to know what to wear after 5 but all of us need to know how to have and use genuinely good manners.

The Australian martial arts market is flooded with American programs on bullying, discipline and more - I wanted something uniquely Australian that suited not only our way of life but also our approach to teaching these skills. Thus the program was born.

The Warrior theme running through "Manners" reflects the martial arts nature of my courses, but these programs don't have to be restricted to a martial arts environment.

Wherever there are adults who really want to effect change in the lives of their students, or parents who want to change some of the problems they are seeing develop at home, there is a use for my simple program and its principles
